Review
"Sweet soul" is not slow ballads, but light-hearted, pop-oriented soul, with the accent on pleasant (often high) vocal arrangements. Not as critically respected as dance soul, deep soul, Motown, or some other subgenres, there were nonetheless many fine cuts recorded in this style during soul's heyday. This compilation has a lot of good ones, including Brenton Wood's "Gimme Little Sign," Deon Jackson's "Love Makes The World Go Round," The Esquires' "Get On Up," The Larks' "The Jerk," Bobby Hebb's "Sunny," and several other lesser-known cuts. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuideTracks
