Review

More than other mid- and late-'60s pop styles, soul lent itself well to instrumentals, both party tunes and slower romantic stuff. This volume has big hits by most of the major soul instrumental stars (Booker T. & the MG's, the Mar-Keys, King Curtis, the Bar-Kays, Young-Holt Unlimited, Ramsey Lewis, Hugh Masekela, as well as one-shots like Cliff Nobles ("The Horse") and cuts by Alvin Cash and the Viscounts that rarely get played on oldies radio. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
