Review

Compared to the first LCD Soundsystem album, Sound of Silver is less silly, funnier, less messy, sleeker, less rowdy, more fun, less distanced, more touching. It is just as linked to James Murphy's record collection, with traces of post-punk, disco, Krautrock, and singer/songwriter schlubs, but the references are evidently harder to pin down; the number of names dropped in the reviews published before its release must triple the amount mentioned throughout "Losing My Edge." There's even some confusion as to which version of David Bowie is lurking around. One clearly evident aspect of the album is that Murphy has streamlined his sound. All the jagged frays have been removed, replaced by a slightly tidier approach that is more direct and packs more punch. Murphy comes across as a fully naturalized producer of dance music -- especially on "Get Innocuous!" -- as opposed to a product of '90s indie rock who has made a convincing switch-up. And yet, the album's best song is sad, should not be played in any club, and it at least matches the work of any active songwriter who has been praised. "Someone Great," a bittersweet pop song built on swelling synthesizers and a dual vocal-and-glockenspiel melody, could definitely be about a devastating breakup ("To tell the truth I saw it coming/The way you were breathing"), at least until "You're smaller than my wife imagined/Surprised you were human," which could mean the song either took a turn for the absurd or is about the death (and funeral) of a loved one. Either way, it is the most moving song Murphy has made, and it only helps further the notion that he should be considered a great songwriter, not simply a skilled musician with a few studio tricks and the occasional clever quip. The closer, "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down," seals it: "New York, you're perfect, oh please don't change a thing/Your mild billionaire mayor's now convinced he's a king/And so the boring collect -- I mean all disrespect/In the neighborhood bars I'd once dreamt I would drink." If he keeps it up, he'll be writing songs for Pixar by 2020. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

History

Songs in the new album, notably "Someone Great," feature parts of the 2006 LCD Soundsystem release 45:33.

For several weeks before and after the album's release the entire album was available for streaming on the band's MySpace page. The video for the track "North American Scum" was also posted to the band's MySpace on February 8, 2007.

On March 12, 2007, to coincide with its official UK release, an underground remix version of the album was released on the internet in aid of charity.[1]

The album reached number 28 in the UK charts. James Murphy has stated that he would like the album to be in the Top 40 on the U.S. Billboard Charts. It debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 46.[2]

The album is dedicated to "the memory of Dr. George Kamen (1942-2006), one of the great minds of his or any generation." The Bulgarian-born doctor was a pioneer of group therapy and had opened a practice in New York.

Critical reaction

On release Sound of Silver received widespread critical acclaim. The Guardian gave the album a 5-star review[3] while music website Pitchfork Media gave the album a score of 9.2/10[4] and nominated the song "All My Friends" as second best song of the 2000s[5]. By the end of 2007 it was ranked by Metacritic as the 10th best reviewed album of the year[6].

In December 2007 it was announced that the album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album.[7] It was nominated for the 2007 Shortlist Prize, where it lost out to The Reminder by Feist. It was also named album of the year by The Guardian[8], Uncut[9] and Drowned in Sound[10]. Pitchfork Media named two of the album's tracks ("Someone Great" and "All My Friends") in the top ten tracks of 2007[11] and the album itself was named the second best album of 2007[12]. Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone[13] both ranked it as the 7th best album of 2007[14]. In 2008 Entertainment Weekly ranked it as one of the top 50 albums of the last 25 years. In January 2008, it was named the album of the year in both the 2007 Village Voice Pazz & Jop and Idolator Pop '07 polls. [15] Time magazine named "All My Friends" one of The 10 Best Songs of 2007, ranking it at #4. Writer Josh Tyrangiel praised the "magic" in the song, saying that the song's "straightforward repetition of the same guitar, keyboard and bass lines, combined with lyrics about life without regret, and life with all kinds of regrets pays off with a punch about what we lose as we get older."[16][17] The track "Us vs. Them" Was featured in the EA Tracks in the videogame Burnout Paradise and "Get Innocuous!" appeared on the Grand Theft Auto IV soundtrack. In 2009 Pitchfork Media named the track "All My Friends", the second best song of the decade, and a week later, Sound of Silver was ranked at #17 in the 200s albums of the decade list.
