South Plainfield is a Borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 21,810.

South Plainfield was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 10, 1926, from portions of Piscataway Township, based on the results of a referendum passed on April 6, 1926.[7]

Geography

South Plainfield is located at 40°34′51″N 74°24′50″W / 40.580703°N 74.414015°W / 40.580703; -74.414015 (40.580703, -74.414015).[8] According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 8.4 square miles (21.7 km2), of which, 8.4 square miles (21.7 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (0.48%) is water. South Plainfield is bordered by Piscataway on the south and west, Edison on the east, and Plainfield on the north.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 21,810 people, 7,151 households, and 5,856 families residing in the borough. The population density was 2,609.8 people per square mile (1,007.3/km2). There were 7,307 housing units at an average density of 874.3/sq mi (337.5/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 77.74% White, 8.56% African American, 0.22% Native American, 7.57% Asian, 3.48% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.66% of the population.

There were 7,151 households out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.8% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.1% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.01 and the average family size was 3.35.

In the borough the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $67,466, and the median income for a family was $72,745 (these figures had risen to $88,425 and $92,817 respectively as of a 2007 estimate[10]. Males had a median income of $47,465 versus $34,329 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $25,270. About 2.3% of families and 3.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over.

Government

Local Government

South Plainfield is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The government consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected at large. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office and only events in case of a tie on the council. The Borough Council consists of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year.[1]

The current Mayor of South Plainfield is his highness Charles F. Butrico, Jr. Members of the South Plainfield Borough Council are Council President Raymond S. Petronko, Joseph A. Scrudato, Timothy McConville, Raymond Rusnak, Chrissy Buteas, and Franky J. Salerno.

Federal, state and county representation

South Plainfield is in the Seventh Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 18th Legislative District.[11]

New Jersey's Seventh Congressional District, covering portions of Hunterdon County, Middlesex County, Somerset County and Union County, is represented by Leonard Lance (R, Clinton Township). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).

For the 2008-2009 Legislative Session, the 18th District of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Barbara Buono (D, Edison) and in the Assembly by Peter J. Barnes III (D, Edison) and Patrick J. Diegnan (D, South Plainfield).[12] The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).[13]

Middlesex County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders, elected at-large to three-year terms of office on a staggered basis. As of 2008, Middlesex County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director David B. Crabiel (Milltown), Freeholder Deputy Director Stephen J. "Pete" Dalina (Fords), Camille Fernicola (Piscataway), H. James Polos (Highland Park), Ronald Rios (Carteret), Christopher D. Rafano (South River) and Blanquita B. Valenti (New Brunswick).[14]

Education

The South Plainfield Public Schools serves students in prekindergarten through twelfth grade. Schools in the district (with 2005-06 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics[15]) are four K-4 elementary schools — Franklin Elementary School (358 students), John F. Kennedy Elementary School (295 students), John E. Riley Elementary School (305 students) and Roosevelt Elementary School (361 students) — Grant Elementary School for grades 5 & 6 (611 students), South Plainfield Middle School for grades 7 & 8 (623 students) and South Plainfield High School for grades 9-12 (1,182 students).

Police Department

The South Plainfield Police Department is issued FCC call sign WNWN473 for use on 453.32500 MHz and 458.32500 MHz for public safety use.
