1. Kaliningrad: founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1288, it was formerly named Tilsit after the River Tilza which itself comes from the Lithuanian tilszus 'marshy'. In 1946 it was renamed 'Soviet' in honour of the Soviet Union when East Prussia was annexed by the Soviet Union at the end of the Second World War.
2. Kirov: originally Kukarka, it was renamed in 1937.
