Special Interest Group

Wikipedia: Special Interest Group

In technical fields, a Special Interest Group (SIG) is a community with a particular interest in a specific technical area. Members of a SIG in a technical field cooperate to effect or to produce solutions within their particular field, and may meet regularly, or at conferences. In other contexts a SIG may simply be a sub-group that shares an interest or other characteristic, functioning within a larger organization.

Computing SIGs

SIGs exist for the fields of computing architecture, graphics, security, etc.

Mathematics SIGs

The Mathematical Association of America includes several SIGs (known collectively as SIGMAAs) on mathematical areas.[1]

Non-Technical SIGs

Organizations which are not technical may also have Special Interest Groups. [2] These SIGs may be focused on a mutual interest [3] or shared characteristic of a subset of members [4] of the organization. For identity-based advocacy groups, see identity politics.
