Spectrum Radio is the only station of its kind in the United Kingdom; a commercial radio station dedicated to serving the ethnic communities which form today's cosmopolitan London. The station currently serves in excess of 20 different communities, broadcasts on 558AM, DAB, Sky as well as on the internet. All the programmes contain news, information and music aimed to each individual community as well as providing a "gathering place" for community news.
History
The station was launched on the 25th of June 1990, broadcasting from studios in Endeavour House, close to the Brent Cross Shopping Centre in North West London. It has since been relocated to a purposed-built headquarter in Battersea, with five state-of-the-art studios.
The launch was originally set to be on 1st June 1990, but was delayed as the 558AM frequency allocated by the then Radio Authority (now regulated by OFCOM) in the UK was occupied by the pirate radio station, Radio Caroline, meaning that Spectrum International had to put back the launch date and broadcast for the first year on an additional frequency of 990AM.
In June 2007, the station celebrated its 17th anniversary, and was visited by many special guests to mark the occasion, including the Director General of the Hong Kong Trade & Economic Office Miss Sarah Wu who helped to launch SCCN, Spectrum Chinese Community Network, the new interactive website for the Chinese Community in the UK.
Programme
The station's aim was to provide radio for London's multicultural communities - Asian, Afro-Caribbean, Chinese, Jewish, Arabic, Greek, Italian and Hispanic... As the station progressed, it later adopted some other communities too, including Persian, Irish and the gay community, as well as an early morning show for London's Dawn Traders.
The current line-up (July 2007) includes AMERICAN PROGRAMME, AMRIT VELA RADIO WITH LUCKY DHILLON, CANADIAN PROGRAMME, CHINESE SPECTRUM, CRI BEIJING, DUTCH PROGRAMME, ETHIOPIAN PROGRAMME, HUNGARIAN PROGRAMME, INTERNATIONAL MUSIC, IRISH SPECTRUM, ISRAEL RADIO, ITALIAN PROGRAMME, KOREAN PROGRAMME, MAURITIAN PROGRAMME, POLISH PROGRAMME, RADIO FATIMA, RADIO FOCUS, RADIO NEW ZEALAND, ROMANIAN PROGRAMME, SABRAS RADIO, SOMALI ON AIR, SWEDISH PROGRAMME, TAMIL PROGRAMME, TIKKUN SPECTRUM (JEWISH), VOICE OF RUSSIA.
