The speed of a projectile at the instant of release. In throwing events (such as discus, shot, and javelin), the speed of release is proportional to the average force exerted through the projectile's centre of gravity. Generally, for a given angle and relative projection height, the displacement of a projectile increases with the speed of release. As the angle of release is lowered, the speed of release needs to be increased to achieve the same displacement. Speed of release depends on the speed of the last part of the body involved in the action at the time of release.
