Review

A four-track CD EP that expands the "Speed Reaction"/"Jet Pilot" single. Spirea X never seemed quite certain as to its calling, tossing out examples of power pop, shoegazer, and even stripped-down and blown-out lo-fi dance, a good part of which placed the group up close and personal with the Spiritualized axis, perhaps as a result of Jim Beattie's history with Primal Scream. The fourth cut here, "Re:Action," is a clever remix of "Speed Reaction" that propels the group into yet another genre or two. Still, why Spirea X vanished quietly is a bit of a mystery, as the band produced engaging work. Beattie, along with bandmate Judith Boyle, resurfaced as part of Adventures in Stereo in the mid-'90s. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide
