The resignation of Liberal Democrat Cllr Danny Hughes led to a by election taking place on the 8 March 2007, which was subsequently won by the Labour candidate, Colin Strickland with a 766 vote majority.[citation needed]

'Under The Mud', a feature film, was written over a 3 year period by a group of teenagers from Speke/Garston in collaboration with Hurricane Films Based on the young writers experiences - despite being set in one of the countries most run down areas, the film is neither gritty or depressing but an uplifting magical tale - describe by critics as 'a scouse fairy tale' and a kind of 'social surrealism'
