Biography

A grunge poet recording for the industrial label TVT, Spookey Ruben was born in Ottawa, Ontario, but grew up with a military family in Germany, where he formed his own speed metal bands during his teenage years. He returned to Canada to attend film school for two years, but quit to play in several area bands. Frustrated by their lack of originality, Ruben began recording more pop-oriented material by himself; when one of his demos reached TVT Records, the label signed him. Debut album Modes of Transportation, Vol. 1 was released in 1995. A split single/live EP was released two years later. 1999's What's a Boy to Do? went unreleased everywhere but Japan, hastening Ruben's exit from TVT. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Los Angeles-based pop musician Spookey Ruben was born in Ottawa, Canada, and grew up in Germany, Holland, and Washington D.C. In his childhood, Spookey's parents insisted he take up an instrument and he chose classical guitar. At age 13 he began playing electric guitar and spent the remainder of his teenage years playing in array of hardcore and speed metal bands (most notably Transilience). It was at this time that he received his nickname "Spookey", a result of his high-school school friends teasing him about his metal-musician appearance with his long hair and Satanic T-shirts. At age 19 he moved to Toronto and enrolled in film school at York University, but remained active in music, making demos on a 4-track recorder.

Spookey began developing his talent for pop songwriting, mixing keyboards with acoustic and electric guitars and trademark distinctive vocals. These experiments led to his solo debut album Modes of Transportation Vol. 1 (TVT Records). International critical acclaim followed, hailing the album as the 'Pet Sounds of the 90s'. Disputes with TVT resulted in his leaving the label and years of apparent silence. Eventually, Ruben simultaneously released two separate CDs entitled Bed and Breakfast (Hi-Hat/Zomba). Currently, Spookey is promoting his independent album Alone at the Zoo, co-produced by John McEntire of Tortoise/The Sea and Cake.
