SpringBoard is the standard application that manages the iPhone OS home screen. As of iPhone OS 3.0, SpringBoard looks for applications in the /Applications and /var/mobile/Applications directories of the iPhone's filesystem.

In 2008, with Apple's release of iPhone OS 1.1.3 and the January App Pack, the SpringBoard went through some changes. Holding a finger on any application for a few seconds causes all of the icons to wiggle. From this view, you can rearrange your icons, delete WebApps and WebClips, and multiple pages can be created by dragging an application to the side of the screen. On jailbroken devices, jailbroken applications cannot be deleted by the traditional method: Holding a finger on the application and selecting delete. Instead, they need to be removed using a 3rd party installer/uninstaller. If the Home button is pressed, the icons will stop wiggling and apps can be opened again. [1]
Jailbroken devices
When an iPhone or iPod Touch has been jailbroken, the SpringBoard is patched and is ready to display third-party applications. In iPhone OS 1.1.3 and 1.1.4, no patching is required and the apps directly load from the SpringBoard.
The SpringBoard on jailbroken devices can also be customised by applying themes or skins. These themes customise the appearance of Apple's graphical user interface.
