The Springfield Armor is a team that will play in the NBA Development League starting for the 2009-10 season. Previously known as the Anaheim Arsenal[1], the Armor will play their home games at the MassMutual Center.[2] The team will be owned by HWS Basketball, LLC which is principally owned by Michael Savit, previously the Senior Vice President of International Management Group and whose HWS Baseball group owns and operates four minor-league baseball teams; the Southern League's Mobile BayBears, the California League's Modesto Nuts, the New York-Penn League's Mahoning Valley Scrappers, and the Coastal Plain League's Columbia Blowfish.[3]
Springfield is known as the "Birthplace of Basketball," because it was at Springfield College that gym teacher James Naismith invented the game in 1891. It is also home to the Basketball Hall of Fame. The "Armor" nickname is an homage to the historic Springfield Armory, which was established by George Washington as the center of the Continental Army's arsenal and has since gone on to be the development home of various small arms for the United States military.
In franchise events in 2009: the team held a name the team contest until May 1.[4] On June 30, the Armor unveiled its name, logo, and colors.[5] On July 29, it was announced that Dee Brown will be the head coach.[6] On September 2, the Armor picked first in the D-League Expansion Draft, which they used on center Marcus Campbell.[7]
