Square Footage of Living Area

Generally measured by exterior walls but does not include basement, garage or carport, patio, or atrium. Measurement standards vary across the country; in some places it is customary to include a fraction of the garage or carport. The area of Condos or Co-Ops is often calculated from interior Paint-To-Paint measurements.
Example: Appraisers, brokers, and consumers will often compare house prices based on the price per square foot of living area.
