Sri Petaling (formerly known as Bandar Baru Seri Petaling), is a main suburb in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is located at the south of the city near Happy Garden, Kuchai Lama and Bukit Jalil.
This suburb was developed in 1981. Before the suburb was established, it used to be a rubber plantation land and hills. In between mid 80s to the mid 90s, it was well known as the 'rubbish area' as it was a large garbage disposal land. The garbage disposal land is no more in use and it is not visible today as it was converted into a playground and carpark area for the '98 Commonwealth Games.
Population in Sri Petaling was not high in the early years as it was really far from the city and isolated. The population grew in the late 80s when two passageways to the next suburb (Salak Selatan aka Salak South & Taman Gembira aka Happy Garden) was open. The growth of population did not stop there as more development has been done over the decade. In 1997, Shah Alam Expressway was open and allowing people to travel to Subang Jaya area within 10 minutes. This Shah Alam Expressway was one of the reasons for the rapid growth in Sri Petaling.
Currently, Sri Petaling have their own Carrefour located at Endah Parade Shopping Complex and The Store hypermarkets. Endah Parade is the largest shopping complex around the area accommodate more than 100 over outlets dealing with fashion, watch, food and beverage, gold smith, music, pharmacy, spa and some massage parlour.Unfortunately Carrefour will move out from Sri Petaling in 2010.There is also a hotel called Hotel Sri Petaling. Food is not a problem in Seri Petaling because there are a lot of 24 hours food stalls. A large mosque is also located near the city centre of Sri Petaling. The fishing pond located next to Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Baru Seri Petaling 2 has closed down and is now left deserted. There is also a huge police station being built.
In the housing area, one of the first fully developed and people moving in would be in the area of Jalan Puteri Senggang as the main road, Jalan Wan Empok 1 and Jalan Wan Empok 2. In the 80s, these areas used to be the centers of Sri Petaling. The houses those days were sold between RM40,000.00 to RM60,000.00 and the value of the houses today are up to RM500,000.00 - RM1,000,000.00.
In Seri Petaling, there are many kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools. Seri Petaling has many education centre such as kindergarten, music school, art centre, dance school, yoga centre and language centre. As for primary schools, there are Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Baru Seri Petaling 1 and 2. There are only two secondary schools in Seri Petaling: SMK Bandar Baru Seri Petaling and SMK Seri Saujana.
For night life lovers, there are two Night Markets on separate nights, one is located at the front of The Store which opens every Tuesday and the other one which opens every Friday, located along the street next to the BHP Petrol Station.There's a disco in Endah Parade operating from 10 midnight to 6 am. Good news for Iranians community, a Persian mini market is located next to Endah Villa condominium. (Aria Mini Market)

There are some baking academies,book stores, cafes and stuff for all ages, making Seri Petaling a well known place among teenagers and adults. There is also a Seri Petaling Community Centre which is often used to play badminton by Seri Petaling residents, it has a football field, basketball court and a playground for children. There's a mosque in Jalan 7/149J called Masjid Jamek near SMK Bandar Baru Seri Petaling.The mosque always packed with Muslim worshiper during Friday and Ramadhan month.
Seri Petaling is an ideal township to live due to the facilities and the easy access to Government department in Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, KL International Airport, Sepang F1 circuit -approx. 25 minutes and Kuala Lumpur - 15 minutes , Petaling Jaya and Damansara -20 minutes , Shah Alam - 20 minutes , Subang and Puchong -10 minutes, Klang- 30 minutes.
