Wikipedia: St James's Gate F.C.

St James's Gate F.C. is an Irish football club that currently plays in the Leinster Senior League. St James Gate was founded as the footballing part of the Guinness Sports and Social club and was named after St. James's Gate Brewery.

It was a founding member of the League of Ireland in 1921 and became the first league champions that season. St James Gate was also the inaugural winner of the FAI Cup. In 1940 a second league title was added but in 1944 having finished in last place, the league denied their application for re-election.

They entered the Intermediate level Leinster Senior League and quickly became one of the top non League sides in Ireland. In 1990 they re-entered the League of Ireland in place of Newcastlewest, this time entering in the second tier, League of Ireland First Division. In 1995 the club was taken over by a consortium with high ambitions, however only one year later, just before the start of the 1996/97 season, they pulled out of the league, unable to meet their financial responsibilities. They were replaced by St. Francis.

Since this time the club have been competing in the Leinster Senior League. The club were relegated out of the Senior Division in 2006 and following 2 unsuccessful season's in Senior 1 the club were in relegated at the end of the 08/09 season.

This once mighty club must now face up to life in the 3rd tier of the Leinster Senior League.

They played in St. James Park from 1921/22-1927/28 before moving to the Iveagh Grounds.
