Stages

Multi-media work in two sections with choreography by Robert Cohan, music by Arne Nordheim (1st section or ‘Stage’) and Bob Downes (2nd stage), film sequences and projections by A. McCall, lighting by J. B. Read, and scenery by Peter Farmer. Premiered 22 Apr. 1971 by London Contemporary Dance Theatre at The Place Theatre, London, with Louther, Lapzeson, and North. The audience sat on the stage while the dancers occupied the area normally taken up by the seating. The action presents a mythic world in which a space age protagonist questions his perceptions and beliefs. It became one of LCDT's most popular works, helping to establish a British audience for modern dance.
