Standoff missiles are missiles "which may be launched at a distance sufficient to allow attacking personnel to evade defensive fire from the target area."[1] Typically they are used against land and sea-based targets in an offensive operation. The name is derived from two characteristics. First is the ability to engage the target while outside of the defenders ability to engage the attacker. Secondly, their main goal is to break an opponent's defensive line and push them back — essentially breaking a standoff. Often, a standoff missile is also a short-range ballistic missile.
