Review

After releasing several competent but more or less undistinguished albums on Capitol, Sammy Hagar switched to Geffen in 1981 and released Standing Hampton, a polished but tough record that showed a surprising amount of pop songcraft. The added production gloss and improved melodic sense proved commercially successful -- the album was his first million-seller and it cracked the Top 30 -- and artistically successful as well; the record was the most consistent and memorable album he had recorded to date, featuring the singles "I'll Fall in Love Again," "Baby's on Fire," and "There's Only One Way to Rock." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Standing Hampton is a Sammy Hagar solo album, his first after moving from Capitol Records to Geffen. Five of its singles charted in either the mainstream rock or pop singles charts.

The English version of the album was released with an interview 45rpm called "Conversations with Sammy Hagar" (Geffen XPS 133).

The Title

Sammy has said that he was originally going to title this album "One Way To Rock". It was a British fan who told him of the term that came to be the title. In Cockney rhyming slang, a "Hampton" is a term for a penis. One that is "Standing", of course, would be a reference to an erection. [1] This led to the cover art that shows a gentleman greeting a woman in various states of undress.

Song Information

  • "I'll Fall In Love Again" was also used in the soundtrack to the film Vision Quest.
  • The 45 single released for "I'll Fall In Love Again" includes the B-side, "Satisfied", which as of 2008, has not been released in another format.
  • "There's Only One Way To Rock" would go on to be one of Sammy's biggest solo hits and a signature tune. This song, along with "I Can't Drive 55", were the two Sammy songs that Van Halen would consistently play when he joined the band.
  • A different version of the song "Heavy Metal" was used for the soundtrack for the animated movie Heavy Metal.
  • The lyrics to the song "Inside Lookin' In" refers to "ringin' just like one UXB". UXB is an acronym for an "unexploded bomb". No known references to the UK punk band UXB have ever been cited.
  • The lyrics to "Sweet Hitchhiker" refers to "Blaupunkt blastin' my favorite song". Blaupunkt refers to a popular brand of car stereo.
  • The song Piece of My Heart is a cover of the song made famous by Janis Joplin.
