Standish is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, England.[1] It is located on the A49 road between the towns of Chorley and Wigan, a short distance from Junction 27 of the M6 motorway.
Historically a part of Lancashire, Standish once had its own railway station, which closed many years ago, as did Victoria Colliery. The Church of St Wilfrid is a Grade I listed parish church, lying within the locality.

History
The name Standish is almost certainly formed from two Old English words stan, meaning stone, and edisc, a park or enclosure.[2]
Governance
Lying within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire since the early 12th century, Standish was anciently regarded a township, but by the mid-19th century was considered united with neighbouring Langree township, as Standish-with-Langtree. This township was within the Standish ecclesiastical parish.
Following the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, Standish-with-Langtree formed part of the Wigan Poor Law Union, an inter-parish unit established to provide social security.[1] Standish-with-Langtree's first local authority was a local board of health established in 1872;[1] Standish-with-Langtree Local Board of Health was a regulatory body responsible for standards of hygiene and sanitation in the township.[1] Following the Local Government Act 1894, the area of the local board became an urban district within the administrative county of Lancashire.[1]
Under the Local Government Act 1972, the Standish-with-Langtree Urban District was abolished, and Standish has, since 1 April 1974, formed an unparished area of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, a local government district of the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester.[1][3]
Geography
Standish is located on the A49 road between Chorley and Wigan, a short distance from Junction 27 of the M6 motorway. Standish is notable for being extremely congested, and despite efforts by Wigan council, remains busy, with traffic stretching for miles, particularly during rush hour. These qualities are present possibly due to the major roads running through it, and its close links to the motorway.
Landmarks
St Wilfrid's Parish Church is the only building with a Grade I listing in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.[4]
