Stanford Serenade, for oboe & 11 instruments (or piano), Op. 430

Classical Work: Stanford Serenade, for oboe & 11 instruments (or piano), Op. 430

Review

This colorfully scored work for oboe soloist and eleven instruments is one of the many products of Milhaud's residency at Mills College in California. The use of percussion certainly adds to the flavor of this piece, dedicated to the Stanford Symphony Orchestra. Though not one of the composer's most memorable works, there are movements of subtle tenderness in each of its three movements. ~ Sean Hickey, All Music Guide
