static stretching

Sports Science and Medicine: static stretching

A form of stretching in which a stretched position is held for a given duration (6-60 s). Static stretching avoids forced movements that can provoke a stretch reflex. During static stretching, the golgi tendon organs are stimulated resulting in relaxation of the muscles being stretched (see inverse stretch reflex). Therefore, there is less danger of damaging the tissues. Compare ballistic stretching.
