In IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) terminology, a station (STA) is a device that has the capability to use the 802.11 protocol. For example, a wireless station may be a laptop, a desktop PC, PDA or Wi-Fi phone. From the network topology point of view Station is the infrastructure mode of the wireless device (or interface) which enables connection (association) with the Wireless Access Point. Generally in wireless networking terminology, a station, wireless client and node are often used interchangeably, and no strict distinction exist between these terms. IEEE 802.11-2007 defines station as following:
In IEEE Std 802.11, the addressable unit is a station (STA). The STA is a message destination, but not (in general) a fixed location.
Second definition from IEEE 802.11 standard:
Any device that contains an IEEE 802.11-conformant medium access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) interface to the wireless medium (WM).
