(b London, 17 March 1924). English composer. He studied at the RCM, where he has taught since 1965. His music, generally on a modest scale, is tasteful and fluently written; it includes song cycles, reflecting his sensitivity to English poetry, and instrumental works (among them pieces for guitar, harpsichord and various wind instruments) which show his urbane style and grasp of idiomatic writing. He is married to the harpsichordist and scholar Jane Clark.
