In return for some silver, Sterling Healthcare staffs the emergency rooms and ICUs of the nation's hospitals with qualified medical personnel. Operating in about 20 states, the physician staffing firm specializes in ER docs, but also staffs critical care units and hospitalist programs. (Hospitalists coordinate the care of hospital patients.) Through its PhyAmerica Government Services subsidiary, Sterling supplies medical personnel to military health care facilities; and its Optimal Billing Solutions unit handles billing and collection. Former owner Resurgence Asset Management sold Sterling Healthcare to Beecken Petty O'Keefe, a private equity firm focused on health care investments, in mid-2008.
