Steven Woodward Naifeh and Gregory White Smith met on their first day at Harvard and began a partnership which was finally formalized in 1981, when they founded Woodward/White, Inc. They have written some 18 books together and won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography for their book, Jackson Pollock: An American Saga. The book was also a finalist for the National Book Award in 1990. In 2001, it was made into the Oscar-winning film, Pollock.
Naifeh has been the President of Woodward/White and editor of The Best Lawyers in America – a guide to the top legal talent in the US – since 1981. In 1989, after Smith successfully overcame what was diagnosed as "terminal" brain cancer, the two began publishing The Best Doctors in America. In 1992, they founded Best Doctors, Inc., to help people find information on doctors when they are facing a medical crisis. Naifeh was Chairman of Best Doctors, Inc. from 1997 until 2000.
