Biography

Stew (born Mark Stewart) grew up in the Los Angeles area where he played in bands from Junior High School onwards. Despite having grown up in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, Stew was well versed in hard rock and progressive rock as well, then on to punk when that scene hit Los Angeles. After making his first recording in a band called the Animated, Stew decided to relocate to New York City, where he performed with both a "found-object all-percussion performance combo" and a more standard R&B/pop band.

After a few years in New York, it was off to Europe, where Stew and some friends eventually settled in Berlin and became a part of the avant-garde artistic squatter community, doing music and performance pieces for several more years.

Finding his way back to Los Angeles, Stew played in a series of bands (imPOPisation, Crazy Sound All Stars, Popular Front) before forming the Negro Problem in 1995. After several singles, the Negro Problem released their first full-length album, Post-Minstrel Syndrome in 1997. Joys & Concerns followed in 1999, further refining Stew's vision within their smart power pop context. In 2000, Stew released Guest Host, featuring songs that have a more sophisticated, Burt Bacharach-pop style and production, while continuing with the more rock-oriented Negro Problem. ~ Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide

Mark Stewart (born 1961), known by his stage name Stew is a Tony award-winning singer/songwriter/playwright from Los Angeles. In the early 1990s, he formed a band called The Negro Problem and later went on to release albums under his own name. His 2000 release Guest Host was named Album of the Year by Entertainment Weekly and his 2002 album, The Naked Dutch Painter and Other Songs, repeated that feat. He toured in support of Love's Arthur Lee in 2002 and in 2003 he was invited to take part in the Lincoln Center's American Songbook series of concerts.

Since 2004, he and his partner Heidi Rodewald, with the support of the Sundance Institute and The Public Theater, have been producing the musical Passing Strange, which won him the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics. In 2005, he reached possibly his largest audience ever when he wrote and performed "Gary's Song" for the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Have You Seen This Snail? (Where's Gary?)". In 2006, he and Rodewald continued to produce Passing Strange as well as working on a film project with The Sundance Institute. Passing Strange had successful runs at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, California, in the fall of 2006, and off-Broadway at The Public Theatre in New York City during the spring of 2007. It received critical praise from both the New York Times and Variety and opened on Broadway at the Belasco Theatre in February 2008 under the aegis of producer Liz McCann and the Shubert Organization. The play garnered seven Tony nominations in 2008, with Stew receiving four nominations and winning the award for Best Book. The play closed in July 2008, with Spike Lee filming the final performances for a feature film which screened at the Sundance Festival in January 2009.

Stew will appear with Heidi at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, for his newest show, "Making It," set to open in February 2010.
