This is trombonist Rick Stepton's third recording with this sextet, and it is the most developed of the lot. Although the band is not a regularly performing group, there is a natural elan among the players that is fully evident. Stepton continues to contribute catchy compositions, and his playing has come a long way since his days with Buddy Rich. He exhibits a warmer, richer, more sensitive sound, mixed with growls and emotional lunges. Veteran trumpeter Herb Pomeroy blows like he is in his prime, and tenor saxophonist Steve Marcus improvises tastefully. As always, drummer Bob Gullotti is a great addition to the group, kicking and spurring uncompromisingly. This one may not knock your socks off, but it should provide some sustained listening pleasure, and a glimpse at one of the leading (and under-appreciated) mainstream trombonists on the scene. ~ Steve Loewy, All Music Guide
