Review

This single is one of two from the Tower in the Fountain of Sparks LP, both of which were released before the proper album to excite Guided by Voices fans who were already drooling with anticipation at the prospect of a new Tobin Sprout/Robert Pollard record. The title track is everything admirers of the classic GBV lineup, of which Sprout and Pollard were the principal members, had been hoping to hear since the former split in 1996. The song is one of the best either of them had written in some time; Sprout's command of pop/rock song structure and Pollard's always engaging, if sometimes enigmatic and ridiculous lyrics, bounce happily along through lo-fi tape hiss as if they'd never separated. The remaining tracks are typically sketchy Guided by Voices B-sides, and, as such, the single is best left to the die-hard fans. ~ Bryan Carroll, Rovi
