Stone Stockton Phillips (born December 2, 1954, Texas City, Texas) is the former co-anchor of Dateline NBC, a newsmagazine TV show. He has also worked as a substitute anchor for NBC Nightly News and Today and as a substitute moderator on Meet the Press. He is known for his clear delivery and appearance of gravitas.[citation needed] This image was satirized by actor Rob Lowe on Saturday Night Live, and by Phillips himself in two appearances on The Colbert Report.

Early years
Phillips was raised in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, Victor, was a chemical engineer and his mother, Grace, was a teacher. Stone also has two siblings: a brother Vic and a sister Minta.
Education
Stone Phillips attended Parkway West High School, where he won so many departmental awards (more than 10) that the school started limiting future students to winning only two awards.[citation needed] While attending Yale University, he was a starting quarterback on the football team and graduated with a degree in philosophy. He was also a member of Yale's Scroll and Key society.
Broadcasting career
In 1986, Phillips landed his first major on-air role as a correspondent for 20/20. That year, he was also a substitute host on Good Morning America and a sports anchor on ABC’s World News Sunday. While at NBC News, Phillips also hosted Weekend Magazine with Stone Phillips. On October 17, 2005, Phillips was a guest on the premiere episode of The Colbert Report.
Phillips anchored Dateline NBC from its inception until July 2, 2007, when NBC, due to cost-cutting, did not renew his $7 million contract.[1] His anchor seat has not been replaced.[2]
Family
Phillips lives in New York with his wife, Debra, and their son, Streeter Phillips (b. 1988).

In the NBC series 3rd Rock from the Sun, William Shatner, as the Big Giant Head, uses the pseudonym 'Stone Phillips' during his appearances on Earth.
