Strömholm, Christer (1918-2002), Swedish photographer and teacher, born in Stockholm. From 1937 he studied art in Dresden, then Prague, Paris, and Stockholm. After fighting as a volunteer in Finland during the Second World War, he resumed his studies in Paris and discovered photography. In the early 1950s he belonged to the fotoform group and participated in its ‘subjective photography’ exhibitions. From 1962 to 1974 he headed Stockholm's influential Fotoskolan, educating many Scandinavian photographers. In the 1960s and 1970s he travelled extensively worldwide, with intervals in Paris. His stature as a major European photographer was recognized late in life. His oeuvre ranges from portraits of artists and writers to street scenes and studies of Paris transsexuals. His contrasty monochrome images, dominated by deep blacks, reveal a bleak outlook influenced by post-war existentialism.
