Plot

Bezerra da Silva is one of the best-known and most influential musicians in his native Brazil. The originator of what some call "gangsta samba," da Silva's music fuses the sensuous rhythms of Brazilian music with lyrics that reflect the gritty realities of life on the street, relating witty but harrowing tales of violence, sex, crime and survival against long odds. By all accounts, da Silva is a man who knows of what he sings, and he and his friends are full of stories of harrowing exploits and dangerous enemies who cannot be trusted. Filmmakers Márcia Derraik and Simplício Neto visit da Silva and explore both his music and the conditions that inform it in Onde a Coruja Dorme (aka Straight To The Point), a documentary that features Bezerra da Silva performing a number of his best known songs as well as interviews with the musician and his friends as they talk about life in Rio de Janeiro, where glamour often rubs up against danger. Straight To The Point was screened in competition at the 2007 Miami International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
