Review

Stranger in My Arms collects the effervescent if forgettable singles recorded by Australian teen pop sensation Lynne Randell during the latter half of the 1960s. The bold, sun-kissed arrangements (courtesy of heavyweights like Ernie Freeman, Herb Bernstein, and Al Gorgoni) place Randell squarely in the post-Sandie Shaw/Cilla Black mold, offering a wide-eyed, innocent interpretation of British R&B and mod idioms. As blue-eyed soul naifs go, Randell is a surprisingly groovy singer, but not quite strong enough to overcome the generally pedestrian material issued to her. Still, it's to her credit that highlights "Take the Bitter with the Sweet" and the title cut later resurfaced as favorites among Britain's Northern soul club denizens, a ringing endorsement of her authenticity. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
