One of the layers of the epidermis or the epithelium of the keratinized oral mucosa, situated just inferior the stratum corneum in keratinized tissues except in the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet, where it lies just inferior the stratum lucidum (transparent layer). Also called the granular layer.

The stratum granulosum (or granular layer) is a layer of the epidermis found between the stratum corneum (and possibly stratum lucidum) and stratum spinosum.[1] In this layer, keratinocytes are now called granular cells, and contain keratohyalin and lamellar granules.[2]
