Biography

The star of such canine adventures as Jack London's Call of the Wild (1921) and White Fang (1925), Strongheart was a German shepherd discovered (in Germany, of course) by director Lawrence Trimble and his wife, screenwriter Jane Murfin. Trimble, who earlier had enjoyed some success with Jean, the Vitagraph dog, was planning a series of films based on the London stories and reportedly searched all over Europe before discovering Etzel Von Ceringen, who became Strongheart. Although a trained attack dog known as a "deadly, four-legged fighting machine," Strongheart took to screen acting like a fish to water and became popular enough to have a dog food named after him. Although his fame may have been eclipsed somewhat by Warner Bros.' Rin-Tin-Tin, Strongheart's following remained solid until his premature death in an on-set accident in 1929. In fact, the Stronghart brand dog food kept his name familiar to future generations of kids and in 1940 he was even the subject of a book, Letters to Strongheart, edited by J. Allen Boone. ~ Hans J. Strongheart, canine star of silent cinema.

Strongheart was the screen name of Etzel von Oeringen (October 1, 1917June 24, 1929), a German shepherd that became one of the earliest canine film stars. After being trained in Germany as a police dog, he was brought to the United States by husband and wife filmmakers Laurence Trimble and Jane Murfin, who had previously worked successfully with Jean, the Vitagraph Dog. He appeared in several movies, including a 1925 adaptation of White Fang. Some of these pictures were highly successful, and did much to encourage the popularity of the breed, but most have been lost.

A popular celebrity in his day, Strongheart paved the way for the much better remembered Rin Tin Tin. Strongheart and his mate, Lady Jule, had many offspring and their line survives to this day. In 1929, while being filmed for a movie, Strongheart accidentally made contact with a hot studio light and was burned. These burns caused a tumor to form and Strongheart died as a result of it.
