STV News at Six is a Scottish regional news programme, covering the two STV franchise areas of Northern and Central Scotland, produced by STV Central (formerly Scottish Television) in the Central region and STV North (formerly Grampian Television) in the Northern region.
The programmes were launched on Monday 23 March 2009, replacing Scotland Today and North Tonight services - both regions continue to receive separate programmes.
The two programmes are produced from studios in Glasgow (Central edition) and Aberdeen (North edition) with reporters also based at studios in Edinburgh, Dundee and Inverness, with political correspondents based at Holyrood and Westminster. Freelance correspondents and camera crews are based on the Orkney and Shetland Isles, in Stornoway, Wick and Fort William.

On air
STV News at Six airs on STV Central and STV North each weeknight at 6:00pm.
The main evening programmes are supplemented by shorter STV News bulletins every day. On weekdays, the lunchtime bulletin follows on from the ITV News at 1:30, giving a six minute round-up of the days developments at 1:55pm. The late night bulletin follows the ITV News at Ten from Monday to Friday at 10:30pm. The bulletin airs for around ten minutes. STV News also airs short early evening bulletins on Saturdays and Sundays.
STV News bulletins are not transmitted during GMTV - separate breakfast bulletins for GMTV viewers in Northern and Central Scotland are provided by Macmillan Media.[1]
Sub-regional bulletins
On January 8, 2007, the former Scotland Today and North Tonight programmes launched sub-regional news bulletins, airing at 6:10pm each weeknight.
Viewers in the west and the east of central Scotland each receive a dedicated bulletin within the main 6pm programme reporting on what is happening in the communities. In the Central region, STV News West covers from Tobermory to Falkirk, with the presenter based in the main studio in Glasgow. Meanwhile, STV News East covers the area from Anstruther to Dunbar and is presented and produced at STV's Edinburgh studios. The East opt-out is directed from a technical gallery in Glasgow.
In the North, viewers in the Dundee, Angus, Perthshire and north-east Fife area get a dedicated STV News Tayside bulletin, presented & produced from STV's studios at Seabraes in Dundee and directed from a technical gallery in Aberdeen. While the Tayside bulletin is broadcast, viewers further north see more news from the north-east, Highlands and Islands areas in STV News North, broadcast from the main studio in Aberdeen. Currently, the station is reportedly looking into the possibility of introducing an opt-out for the Highlands and Islands from their Inverness studios. The proposed service was originally considered but put on hold owing to problems with the Rosemarkie transmitter.[2]
STV News Review
STV News Review, a short weekly programme reviewing the week's main stories on both STV News services is broadcast directly after the Sunday evening bulletin, signed for the deaf and hard of hearing by on-screen BSL interpreters.
In the Central region, the programme is signed by Morag Donnelly and Avril Hepner (on a rotating basis). The programme is produced on most weeks by either Joanne Bonnar or Laura Miller.
In the North region, the programme is signed by either Bert Smale, John Gill or Elaine Campbell from the Aberdeen Deaf Society. The programme is narrated and produced on most weeks by Andrea Brymer.
Proposals for hour-long programme
On 17 September 2009, STV announced proposals to extend STV News at Six to one hour, to incorporate national and international news from ITN and replacing the national ITV Evening News at 6:30pm.
The company says that under the plans, the current sub-regional opts for East & West Central Scotland, Tayside & North East Fife and North East Scotland would be extended to ten minutes length with a new opt-out introduced for the Highlands and Islands. A bulletin for the Scottish Borders is also planned, pending on agreement with ITV plc, the owners of ITV Tyne Tees and Border, which currently serves the area.[3]
It was also reported that should the proposals be approved by the broadcasting regulator OFCOM and if the company is successful in receiving public subsidy to fund news output, the hour-long programme would be presented from STV's studios in Glasgow across both current STV regions, signalling the end of standalone news services for Central Scotland from Glasgow and for North and North East Scotland from Aberdeen.[4][5]
