A major gland that has an irregular form and is situated in the submandibular triangle, bordered anteriorly by the anterior belly of the digastric muscle and posteriorly by the stylomandibular ligament. Its mucoserous section is carried by Wharton’s duct, whose orifice lies at the summit of a small papilla (submandibular caruncle) bilateral to the lingual frenum.
