A group of neck muscles that have their proximal attachment on the occipital bone and transverse process of the first cervical vertebra, and their distal attachments on the posterior surfaces of the first and second cervical region. They are the obliquus capitis superior, obliquus capitis inferior, rectus capitis posterior major, and rectus capitis posterior minor. Their primary actions are extension, lateral flexion, and rotation, of the cervical region of the spine.
