subtitles, supertitles, surtitles

Subtitles, printed captions that translate the dialogue in a foreign-language cinema or television film, appear at the bottom of the screen. Supertitles or surtitles, a more recent invention, translate the text of a play or opera as it is being said or sung, and are usually projected above the stage.
