A subunit is a subdivision of a larger unit.
For example, 50 cents may refer to 50 subunits of currencies where the subunit is called a cent.
In military organizations, a sub-unit is smaller in size than a battalion and is commanded by an Officer Commanding.
In chemistry, the term can refer to a monomer, in a polymeric molecule, and in biochemistry, it may apply to the protein subunits.
