Succoth Benoth

Bible Guide: Succoth Benoth

A Babylonian deity. Referring to the Babylonians settled at Samaria, the Bible says "The men of Babylon made Succoth Benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima" (II Kgs 17:30). These are all names of deities, and Succoth Benoth seems to be a corrupted form of a deity, possibly the Babylonian deity Sikkuth (Amos 5:26). Marduk had a consort named Sarpanitum, and Benot may be the ending of her name. It has also been suggested that Benoth is identical with the deity Banitu "the builder", one of the epithets of Ishtar, identified with Sarpanitum.
