Defined by the IOC Medical Commission at the 2004 in the Laussanne Reccomendations for Sudden Cardiovascular Death in Sport: preparticipation cardiovascular screening as ‘death occurring within one hour of the onset of symptoms in a person without a previously recognized cardiovascular condition that would appear fatal; this excludes cerebrovascular, respiratory, traumatic and drug related causes’. More than 90% of non-traumatic sudden deaths are related to a pre-existing cardiac abnormality.
