Biography

As N.Y.C. rap-metal institution Biohazard's career was winding down, guitarist/vocalist Billy Graziadei called up singer Karl Bernholtz (ex-Groovenics) in late 2004 to initiate what would develop into Suicide City. Another former Groovenic, guitarist AJ Marchetta, was soon brought on board along with ex-Kittie bassist Jennifer Arroyo, the latter of whom Graziadei had vowed to be in a band with after meeting her while touring with Biohazard. The final addition of drummer Danny Lamagna (on the recommendation of Sworn Enemy) completed the Brooklyn-based quintet, though technically, the band didn't really get serious until 2005, after Graziadei and Arroyo were officially done with their previous bands. A five-song demo was recorded early that year; originally dubbed Give Me Your Pity, it was later renamed Not My Year and released as their debut EP in April. Crafting dark and volatile punk with prominent metal leanings, goth theatrics, and screamo-worthy shrieks, their music asserted influences like the Misfits, Black Sabbath, Joy Division, and the Cure. Suicide City first toured with Otep in summer 2005 before hitting the entire U.S. as openers for Mindless Self Indulgence. Their especially intense and vigorous live show, coupled with an innate D.I.Y. work ethic, managed to sell over 4,000 copies of their EP without any label or distribution help. Suicide City continued to command attention while on the road with Taking Back Sunday in spring 2006 before joining up with GWAR that August. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

Biography

Suicide City is a punk rock band, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Billy Graziadei, vocalist Karl Bernholtz, drummer Danny Lamagna, guitarist AJ Marchetta and bassist Jennifer Arroyo.

They released the EP "Not My Year"in 2005 themselves, selling 7000 copies without label support. They have also self-produced and released a live DVD, entitled ‘Live From CBGB.’

The band has toured with Otep, Taking Back Sunday, Gwar, Danzig, Life of Agony, Birthday Massacre, Mindless Self Indulgence, Despairs Ray, MXPX, and Mushroomhead.

On August 4, 2009, Suicide City released their debut full-length effort, entitled ‘Frenzy,’ via Brooklyn label The End Records. “‘Frenzy’ is such an eclectic blend of music,” says Marchetta. “This band is unafraid and unapologetic about what we create, and because of that we have an album with a really wide musical landscape.” Graziadei points out, “In our short time together, Suicide City has achieved more on our own than most bands do in their whole career with the help of a label.” Benholtz described it thusly: “Suicide City thrives on making people happy and smile through our music without having to candy coat anything. Life does not ‘suck and then you die.’ Life is great, dangerous, exciting, strange, and then you die. I guess that’s what we’re trying to portray with our music.”

Touring

The band has made numerous trips around the United States while touring with Mindless Self Indulgence, Gwar, Otep, Life of Agony, Taking Back Sunday, and Glenn Danzig.

The band recently returned from a tour in Brazil with MxPx, where they co-headlined the 2008 Maquinaria Rock Fest with Sepultura, the Misfits, and Suicidal Tendencies on May 18th 2008.[1]

Other

Suicide City was featured on the "More and Faster" mix of Mindless Self Indulgence's "Straight to Video", which appears on that band's "Shut Me Up" single.

Suicide City released a live DVD in November 2008, one of the last shows at CBGB before it closed down.

Suicide City signed to The End Records in the summer of 2009.[2]
