Suite for string orchestra, Op. 109

Classical Work: Suite for string orchestra, Op. 109
  • Date: 1978
  • Composer: Paul Creston
  • Period: Modern (1910-1949)

Review

The Suite for strings Op 109 was written in 1978. It is an example of the neo-classical side of Creston. The work comprises four movements. The first, Prelude, has an unmistakable neo-Baroque flavor. It is based on two main themes, introduced by the violins and celli, respectively. The second, Badinage, is a scherzo-like piece based on pizzicato rhythms. The third, Cantilena, is based on a cantabile refrain introduced by the celli, successively taken up by other instruments. The four and last, Cumulus, is a fugue. ~ Hector Bellman, All Music Guide
