(chemistry) The conversion of a compound into a sulfate by the oxidation of sulfur, as in sodium sulfide, Na2S, oxidized to sodium sulfate, Na2SO4; or the addition of a sulfate group, as in the reaction of sodium and sulfuric acid to form Na2SO4.
