Plot

This routine comedy is about a series of misadventures during a family vacation at the beach and stars John Candy (who died of a heart attack while filming in Mexico in 1994) as John Chester and Karen Austin as his long-suffering wife Sandy. When the family leave for what turns out to be a pretty decrepit shack on a public beach, Jack eventually locks horns with the owner of this dubious piece of real estate, and their conflict terminates in a boat race in which Jack and his motley crew are at first glance, and even second, no match for the others in the race. In the meantime, there are plenty of skits with Jack dressed as anything from an ample, unintentional likeness of a geisha to the normal tourist dude in a Hawaiian shirt. His wife and daughter tackle their own problems, related to sex in one way or another, mostly another. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Plot summary

The plot involves John Candy's character taking his family on a summer vacation in fictitious Citrus Cove, Florida, during which they are constantly beset by a never-ending barrage of problems. Candy's character receives a leg injury that prevents him from being able to spend time with his family, and his immobility, though temporary, is a major source for much of the film's comedy.

When Atlanta air-traffic controller Jack Chester and his family leave for what turns out to be a fairly decrepit shack on a public beach in Florida, he eventually locks horns with pompous local sailing champion Al Pellet, the owner of this dubious piece of real estate. Their conflict culminates in a boat race in which Jack and his motley crew are at first glance no match for the others in the race.

Soundtrack

Jimmy Buffett's "Turning Around" plays during the closing credits. It is also played when the Chesters are fixing up the Barnacle. The movie soundtrack is the only place to find this song.

The film is the origin for many comedic lines:

  • "It's fresh grouper! Lightly breaded, sauteed to a golden brown, with a hint of Dijon." (Scully's Catch of The Day- Fish Sticks).
  • "Oh you just got into town? Well I've been in town for thirty years. Thirty years. And every summer you goddamn renters come down here, and you think you can take over the whole town, well you can't. BOIL THEM!" - Captain Al Pellet, at the Yacht House.
  • "Your wife's on my Wham-o." -Jack at the beach trying to retrive a frisbee from a kissing couple.
  • "Oh yeah, those are fun for the whole family."- Jack to the neighbors who show off the wife's new 'enlargement' to everyone.
  • "You shouldn't be cookin on the beach, it's illegal." - Jack after his leaky cooler put out a lady's grill on the beach.
  • "We name sailboats after ladies, to remind us to treat them like ladies." Scully to Jack during a sailing lesson.
  • "Great. We live next to lifeguards. A whole gaggle of them!" Jack meeting his new neighbors.
  • Oh and this is YOUR TABLE? Oh I see...this is YOUR TABLE...and these are YOUR lobsters? And I suppose this is YOUR wife? Is this YOUR tie? Is this your shirt? IS this your belt? Are these your shorts? TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT." - Capt. Al Pellet in response to Jack protesting over Pellet and his party taking what would've been Jack's table and then taking the last lobsters from the tank.
  • "You put a hole in my boat!" says Pellet. "I was on the starboard tack! I had the right of way!" Chester replies, "I got a kid in the boat. You were the one that was supposed to move dips***!... s*** for brains!"
  • "I need a GRAND SAIL! Thirty foot high she be!" Angus, the designer of the Barnacle
  • "Do you know what it feels like to peak when your 18?" Jack asks Scully. "Yes. Yes, I do. Would you like to learn to sail... really to sail."
  • "You couldn't beat my dinghy." Captain Pellet to Jack after being challenged to the Regatta.
  • "I wouldn't take this check from you if my children were starving in the street. And thats the best money I've ever spent" Pellet to Jack at a funeral parlor, refusing to give Jack the last two weeks of vacation.
  • "He was a great man, and he will be sorely, sorely missed. NOW, I will sign the papers." Cpt. Pellet signing ownership on the former owner's casket at the wake.
  • "Yeah? You trying to watch the Smurfs? Did you see the one where Papa Smurf took a crutch and smash the shit out of a guy with a red hat?! Did you see that one?! You wanna see that one?!"- Jack Chester when he finds a man in a red hat on his bed watching TV
