Sunrise Senior Living, Inc. (NYSESRZ) is a senior living company based in the McLean section of unincorporated Fairfax County, northern Virginia, which operates over 440 Sunrise locations worldwide.

History and core values

Paul and Terry Klaassen use the Dutch model of long-term care to look after seniors, also called assisted living. [1]

The Klaassens opened two more Sunrise communities in the mid 1980s. In the spring of 2003, Sunrise Assisted Living changed its name to Sunrise Senior Living.

Paul and Terry Klaassen established Virginia-based Sunrise Assisted Living in 1981, before changing the company name to Sunrise Senior Living in 2003. Sunrise Senior Living is a provider of senior care services, including independent and assisted living, short-term stays, Alzheimer’s and hospice care, and rehabilitation and nursing services.

From its first community in Oakton, VA, Sunrise Senior Living has expanded to include an Victorian senior living community; public stock offering on NASDAQ (SRZ); Marriot Senior Living Services; a program called The View for vision-impaired seniors; a condominium project in Maryland; and senior living facilities in Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany. In the U.S., Sunrise Senior Living offers senior homes in 33 states and Washington, D.C. By 2009, Sunrise Senior Living employed approximately 40,000 healthcare staff members and operated more than 440 senior communities globally for a residential capacity of 52,000 seniors.
