The Sunwapta River is a major tributary of the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada.
Sunwapta River originates near the Columbia Icefield, as a small stream flowing from Sunwapta Lake, at the toe of the Athabasca Glacier. It peters out at the Banff National Park boundary, then turns southeast where it is followed by the Icefields Parkway past the Columbia Icefield. It merges into the Athabasca River three km west of Sunwapta Falls.
Sunwapta is a Stoney Indian word meaning "turbulent river" or "radiating waves".
