Plot

The eleventh season of the popular reality-game series Survivor is set in the teeming (and extremely muddy!) jungles of Guatemala. Surrounded by crocodiles, howler monkeys and hordes of mosquitoes, and battling heat that goes far beyond intense, the 18 castaways compete to be the "sole survivor" who, after 39 grueling days, will return to civilization with the million-dollar grand prize. In keeping with the locale, all of this year's Reward and Immunity challenges are tied in with Mayan culture and traditions, ranging from the solving of arcane puzzles to the ancient game of Court Ball (except that the losers aren't immediately executed, as was once the custom). Also figuring into the action is a clay "Immunity Doll", the search for which consumes several episodes. This season's contestants range in age from 21 through 63, and include a sports-radio host, a zookeeper, a New York City doorman, a water-skiing instruction, a retired fireman, a female police detective, a former NFL player, and a real estate broker who moonlights as a model. Plus, two of the castaways who'd previously been voted off of Survivor: Palau, Bobby Jon Drinkard and Stephenie LaGrossa) are afforded second chances in Guatemala.
