Sutterton

Wikipedia: Sutterton

Sutterton is a village in Lincolnshire, England, around seven miles south-south-west of Boston, and near the junction of the A16 and A17 to the south.

Geography

The village lies on the B1397 (former A16). The Spalding bypass opened as the Spalding-Sutterton Improvement in 1995. Close to the east is Algarkirk with which the village shares the Fourfields primary school. Before 1970, they also shared the Algarkirk and Sutterton railway station on the Spalding - Boston line now next to the A16. The A17 also passed through the village via Wigtoft. To the north is Kirton.

It is one of eighteen parishes which, together with Boston, form the Borough of Boston in the county of Lincolnshire, England. The local government has been arranged in this way since the reorganization of April 1, 1974, which resulted from the Local Government Act 1972. This parish forms part of the Five Villages electoral ward.

History

St. Mary the Blessed Virgin, Sutterton

Hitherto, the parish had formed part of Boston Rural District, in the Parts of Holland. Holland was one of the three divisions (formally known as parts) of the traditional county of Lincolnshire. Since the Local Government Act of 1888, Holland had been in most respects, a county in itself.

Sutterton has a local general store and post office where basic necessities can be bought for a cheap price; this is the centre and hub of the community. The store sells a variety of things from food, fresh local vegetables, cards, gifts and good quality toys as well as newspapers and magazines (which can also be delivered). Dry cleaning, photocopying, laminating and access to fax are all further useful local in-store services. The Post Office conveniently offers Euros on demand and the recently introduced £1 aisle (as well as the many constant offers and bargains) are popular and renowned amongst the local villagers. In store there is a free to use cashpoint - a useful place to gain access to money in such a remote village. It is run by Hilary who takes charge of the Post office and her husband Simon Footitt who is in charge of the shop. It has been rumoured that the shop is haunted by a young man who committed suicide down a well when the building served as a bakery. Mysterious things such as jam flying off the shelves is a common occurrence. The parish church is dedicated to St Mary the Blessed Virgin. Village pubs are the Thatched Cottage on Pools Lane and the Waggoner's Rest Hotel on Station Road.
